ALICE APHRA

I’m Alice, a freelance embroiderer based in Bristol. I love to work with collage and take a multimedia approach to my work with storytelling being central to my practice.

During my Art Foundation, I was able to sample and play with many areas of design; from ceramics to acid etching to analogue photography. This formed a strong pillar that can be seen in my work today with the focus being on collaging unusual materials and mixing techniques.
Although I have explored a variety of subjects in my work, identity and heritage can always be seen as a strong thread in every project or brief I undertake. These core themes provide a consistent undercurrent throughout my creative explorations.

During my undergraduate studies at Nottingham Trent University, I undertook a placement year in which I had internships with both Hermione De Paula and Hand & Lock. The combination of these two brands offered a huge breadth in terms of learning more about the industry, with such an established heritage atelier like Hand & Lock alongside the modern designer Hermione De Paula

I often start any project out with collecting lots of objects. I really love having the physical items around me to draw from when creating. My studio space is always covered with various materials and Knick knacks.
